I have never felt trapped in a hotel. Taxis can take you anywhere. AI is very convenient when you have teens since they can be on their own in the resort and eat what they want when they want without the parents having to worry about giving them money or how much of a tab they are running up on room service and restaurant bills and smoothies by the pool.
: Never been there myself. It is located several miles north of Ixtapa (and farther south still is Zihuatenajo, a fun beach-side Mexican town). Apparently the Melia pool area is great, the sand grey and not the best. It gets pretty good reviews from what I've read for people who like all-inclusive resorts, especially those with families. (And if you are going for your kids, the Club Med which is fairly near the Melia, is far better in terms of activities - but I think it is closed and being renovated right now...).
: Try to get down to Ixtapa or even better Zihuatenajo - great restaurants and places to walk around. Go to the sunset bar at the Catalonia hotel on la Ropa Beach (Zihua) abit before sunset - fantastic views and great margaritas too. Notwithstanding the quality of the Melia, it is a shame to go to that area and be stuck in the hotel. Tom
