The beaches in the Riviera Maya (mainland area, Playacar, Tulum, Cancun, etc.) are far "better" in a traditional sense. The beaches in Cozumel are okay, not great. You go to Cozumel mainly for the diving or snorkeling. I am not saying don't go to Cozumel, but if you expect a beautiful, traditional beach you won't get it. There are a few (Iberostar is definitely not one of them and Occidental's beach is narrow), but most are small.

Don't know where you got your info about the Riviera Maya beaches, but whoever told you that was way over-exaggerating.

: We are planning our honeymoon in July. Has anyone been to Iberostar Cozumel or Occidental? Are the beaches in good shape? We were going to go to Rivera Maya, but have heard the beaches are gone. I appreciate any help. We are clueless!
