I know what you mean. I have been to Aruba in March and stayed at an AI, the Divi. We played a lot of money because we had an ocean front casita. The nicest room at the hotel.
On several days we could not even lay out on the beach because the wind was whipping so hard, it felt like we were being sand blasted.
We also visited the high rise section and saw 100's of people crammed around a swimming pool. It wasn't my cup of tea.
I am also an avid Riviera Maya person. I have been about 12 times now. And, I am going this January 2008. I am looking for another destination for March. I am looking into Grand Cayman, only because my city, Boston, has direct flights.
Good luck. I think it will be hard to beat the quality and value of the resorts in Riviera Maya.
