St Maarten violence??

Hi, I just finished reading a story in my local paper (I live 30 minutes west of Toronto) about a local mom and her son, on the March break, were robbed (she was cut on her hands with a knife and he was shot, bullet grazed his back) while walking on a beach with two others. Great Bay beach I believe. Now...would this (not that anyone deserves to be robbed!) be because of the time of night, the paper said it happened just before 11:30p.m.? Appartently, two other Toronto women were robbed just last Saturday in St Maarten too. I am booked for May 5, with 7 family members, we are staying on Maho beach. Should I be concerned, or should common sense prevail? It'll be our first time there, and are hugely looking forward to it.
